The Architect

My deep appreciation for drawing allowed me to excel as an architect but eventually, I had to recognize that this success came at a cost to my authentic self. This complex relationship is captured in “The Architect”, the second portrait completed in the series. Choosing to pursue architecture over fine arts was a perfectly logical decision but behind my rationalization was fear. I enjoyed the validation that came with succeeding in a difficult field but always questioned whether it was the right choice.
For a senior design project, I explored the concept of free will. If we do not choose to be born, how can we ever say that our will is free? I proposed that for one to be truly free, they must sacrifice themselves to transcend the will that was imposed on them by existence. 10 years later, I applied this concept to my life and incorporated the drawings in this self-portrait. As interlaced mechanical forms glide smoothly over the figure their creator is all but obscured. Is he controlling these complex forms or is he overcome by them? Is he hiding behind their power or is he trapped by it?
